Grand Canyon Guano Point, Home to the Blight of a Guano Mine

The west rim of Grand Canyon is indisputably one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Carved over the course of millions of years the place truly is one of America’s “sacred” places. It is a place that creates clichés; Eagles soar, fragrant breezes waft, crimson sunsets . . . set, shadows dance. It is a place unspoiled, revered, respected; that is until the 20th century. In the 1930’s mining interests discovered a virtual treasure trove of bat crap. A veritable golden pot of poop. Somehow thinking that quick profits from feces is more important than respecting one of the most fetching places in the country, the U.S. Guano Corp. of Calgary obtained a “right” to mine the muck.Apparently, they felt it would be just fine to build a horrible looking monstrosity of a cable system across the heart of the canyon to extract the excrement. When they depleted all the doo doo these people then decided it would be just fine to crap all over the environment and leave their piece of s#1t tramway for everyone to see. They abandoned the project in 1974.On what planet I this OK? Apparently ours. Seen the Gulf of Mexico lately?

In 2011 Jonathan Look decided to change his life and pursue adventures instead of comfort and possessions. His goal is to travel the world solo; one country at a time, one year at a time. To accomplish this he got rid of most of his possessions, packed up what little he saw as necessities and headed out. His goal is to spend ten years discovering new places, meeting new people and taking the time to learn about them, their values and their place on this tiny planet. He embraces the philosophy that says a person is the sum of their experiences and rejects the fraud of modern consumerism that makes people into slaves of their consumption. He doesn't intend to be modern day ascetic, just more mindful of his place in the world and to make decisions according to that new standard.
