I have always been a bit of a foodie and I was pleasantly surprised to find that Vientiane, Laos has a thriving organic market at Pha That Luang on Saturday and Wednesday mornings. It is not the largest organic market I have ever seen, but the sellers seem to take real pride in their produce and the prices are incredibly cheap. Of course the earlier you arrive the better and for now it is almost all vegetables, but I am hoping that soon the will have cheeses, honey and other artisan products.

Sarah and I normally ride the little motorcycle and fill two or three bags with whatever is fresh that day. Usually we can find baby lettuce, mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, mango, papaya and one or two things we can’t identify, but would like to try. Our new house has a real kitchen with an oven (not always the case in SE Asia) and I have been getting reacquainted with my kitchen skills. I have always liked it here, but this place has a way of growing on you. Vientiane is definitely a great place to base for this phase of the retirement travel adventure!
